Watching Time Go By
02:55

Taking a break in the hills of Ohio
Sitting on a dock looking over a river
Watching my kid look for salamanders
With her legs hanging down
Just over there my wife is reading
Another library book since the school years over
And we finally get some time to get off
This merry go round
Watchin’ the time go by
Lettin’ it pass me by
People keep saying to take it slow
With regret in their eyes that always shows
The memories of before their kids
Left them alone
And I think of all the practices
And rehearsals and time that’ll pass
Before all we can do is
Call them on the phone
Watchin’ the time go by
Lettin’ it pass me by
But if every moment has to be a moment
Then there’s no time left for normal moments
And that’s where the moments happen
After all
So all I can do is watch my kid
Lean over the edge to look for salamanders
And make sure she’s safe
And that she doesn’t fall
Watchin’ the time go by
Lettin’ it pass me by

A Nice Chair

Italo Calvino, whose name I’m mispronouncing
Wrote a book a while ago that I’m almost finished reading
It makes you ask what you know with starts, but no endings
Or if your tale is just the flow of some other beating wings
Dear listener, I hope you’re in a nice chair
With someone there, next to you breathing your air
It was dark and stormy when the story opened wide
All was there, right before me, but the future ran to hide
Dear listener, I hope you’re in a nice chair
With someone there, next to you breathing your air

Adventure
02:48
|

Waving as you step out the door,
I watch you walk toward the unknown
Those little purple shoes you once wore
replaced long ago as you’ve grown
With a morning horizon over shadows so long
You’re finding exactly where you belong
Through this adventure that you’re on
With arms stretched out, you embrace the breeze
Every challenge met, you’ve got this, you’ll see
We will watch you sail through skies so wide
And with each fail, you’ll fill our hearts with pride
Paint the sky with colors yet unknown
Craft a story at every dawn
Of this adventure that you’re on
With each burst of laughter, every squeal of delight
I counted down the joys of all those whispered goodnights
As you take this journey and with each stone you turn
Keep this curiosity, your need to learn
The stars guiding you in the dark blue sky
You’re looking up as you wave good bye
For this adventure that you’re on

Wish
02:48
|

I wish that you could see
How I could be
The only one you need
I wish that you could know
How I love you so
And you could let him go
I wish I could have played
A song to make you stay
Instead you turned away
I wish that you might take
Another chance to make
A long life work with me

There’s so much pain coming across my phone
The world is burning, good people are all alone
I turn it off in the comfort of my own home
Since all is lost and nothing can be done
At least, that’s what they say
At least, that’s what they say
But we’re standing in the way
Refusing to play
Everyone around me staring with eyes so vacant
It’s wild that this is what it looks like to make it
In a scene where so few say that they can take it
It’s so easy to turn away and just to fake it
At least, that’s what they say
At least, that’s what they say
As we’re dragging through the clay
With our dreams of yesterday
Shoulders that once carried are getting older
Ideals that ran hot are fading and colder
The weight of the world is heavy as a boulder
So we turn away and just let it smolder
At least, that’s what they say
At least, that’s what they say
In the silence where we lay
Watching the world decay
